Wood Wax Finish, our all-in-one stain and finish, is available in twenty-five different colour options, but did you know that you can mix any two of those twenty-five colours to create your own custom look? Wood Wax Finish is offered in 'Transparent' and 'Intensive' colour tones. As the name suggests, Transparent tones allow more of the wood grain to come through, whereas Intensive colour tones have a much higher pigment concentration and offer greater colour saturation after a single coat.
In this video, we start with five colours from the Intensive colour range: 3188 Snow, 3131 Green, 3105 Yellow, 3125 Blue, and 3104 Red. With these colours, we mix different custom colours using a variety of ratios. If you want to recreate these colours yourself, we have included the tones and ratios below:
3188 Snow + 3105 Yellow, 10:1
3104 Red + 3188 Snow, 10:1
3125 Blue + 3188 Snow, 10:1
3188 Snow + 3131 Green, 10:1
3104 Red + 3105 Yellow, 5:1
3131 Green + 3105 Yellow, 2:1
3125 Blue + 3105 Yellow, 2:1
The above is just an example of the range of colours you can create - feel free to experiment and use any ratio or combination of colours - you are only limited by your imagination (and the size of your mixing cup).
In addition to custom colours, you can use different application methods to change the final look of your piece. The video shows each colour applied with an Osmo Brush to a piece of Douglas Fir - once applied, one half is wiped off using a clean cloth, while the other half of the piece is allowed to dry (without removing excess product). Using a cloth to wipe off excess product results in a more subtle colouration, and allows more wood grain to show through.
Brushing Wood Wax Finish and allowing it to dry gives a more saturated effect and higher sheen level (closer to semi-gloss, compared to a satin sheen when wiped off). Use application methods to your advantage and see just how flexible Wood Wax Finish truly is! A lint-free cloth, non-abrasive white pad, natural bristle brush, or Osmo microfiber roller are all acceptable methods of application.
Wood Wax Finish can be used on any interior substrate, such as furniture, children's toys, wall or ceiling paneling, exposed beams, doors, countertops, and even floors. For high-wear areas, a single coat of Wood Wax Finish must be top-coated with Polyx-Oil for maximum durability.
If you are curious about how to handle mixing ratios, simply divide "1" by the number of parts in the mix. For example, a 10:1 ratio has 11 parts (10 + 1 = 11). Multiply the resulting number by 100 to express as a percentage. So, 1/11 = 0.0909, and 0.0909 x 100 = 9.09%. This means each part represents 9.09% out of 100%. 1 x 9.09 = 9.09% and- 10 x 9.09 = 90.09%: now, add the two sums together, and you get 99.99%.
To translate this into physical amounts that can be mixed, you can measure the colours by weight. For example, if aiming for a total weight of 50g for each colour, you can calculate the colour weights using the percentages generated from the ratio for the different colours. So, 50g x 0.0909 (9.09%) = 4.545g gives you the weight required for your 1 part, and the remaining 45.455g represents the other 10 parts of the ratio. Remember, your ratios don't need to be exact (this isn't rocket science), so measure your colour amounts however you want, just keep track of what you mix in case you want to repeat it again!
